Remote Teaching Support

We hope your first day back teaching was energizing, even as we all experience difficult times and continued uncertainty. The CTL's primary goal right now is remembering our common humanity in this moment, extending grace while navigating this new terrain.



We would love to hear the stories that emerge during the weeks ahead. Did you witness inspiration, achieve something you didn't think was possible, or become completely stumped and model humanity for your students? Please use our web form to share your story. We'd like to find a way to share these, with your permission, so that our community can collectively face the challenges ahead.



In this edition, you will learn about:

  • The third session in our faculty peer support series about remote lectures, as well as the recordings from last week.
  • Graduate student peer support sessions - spread the word!
  • A conversation about the student experience and the digital divide (4/2)
  • The next session in the Teaching Preparation Series (Title XI, today at 5:00).
  • Finally, along with our Canvas partners, we are offering a full menu of technology training to help you make sense of what is available.

Faculty Peer Support for Spring 2020 Remote Instruction

As you transition your course to remote instruction for the remainder of the spring 2020 semester, would you like to hear how some of your peers are doing it?  Drop in on Thursday (4/2) for an informal 45-minute Zoom conversation where a Provost’s Teaching Fellow shares insights around a pressing question and facilitates a conversation amongst you and your colleagues.  Please RSVP for this session and share a question you would like to bring to the discussion.

Graduate Student Peer Support for Remote Instruction

As courses transition to remote instruction for the remainder of the spring 2020 semester, the CTL is offering a series for graduate student instructors about navigating this transition. Drop in on Friday (4/3) and Monday (4/6) for some informal 45-minute conversations on Zoom where graduate students from the CTL share insights around pressing questions and facilitate a conversation amongst peers. Please RSVP for one or more sessions and share a question you’d like to bring up for discussion or a strategy that has worked for you.

Remembering the Student Experience

  • We invite you to RSVP for Instructional Continuity and the Digital Divide: Taking a Student-Centered Approach to Online Teaching which will take place on Thursday (4/2) from 11:00am-12:00pm.

    Given the challenges that we face as an institution this semester, how can we ensure that all of our students are given the opportunity to continue to learn in courses that are suddenly online?  Join the CTL and Evangeleen Pattison, Ph.D (Curriculum Specialist for Academic Initiatives, Independent Inquiry & Quantitative Reasoning Flag, School of Undergraduate Studies) for a discussion in which we explore strategies that help address questions of accessibility and inclusivity.


Teacher Preparation Series

Today, the Teaching Preparation Series continues with a session on Title IX at 5:00pm. Please see more information on this calendar event and proceed to the TPS Canvas course for signup details.


Technology Tools

We are combining forces with our colleagues on the Canvas Team to help you master software applications that support remote instruction. The growing UT Austin toolbox has something for everyone. Remember, you only have to use what works for you! We'll help you sort out the purposes best suited for each tool in the hopes of making your remote teaching practice easier and more effective.

  • Panopto is a powerful lecture capture solution that eases the burden of recording presentations and sharing videos. (Sessions: 3/31, 4/1, 4/2...and many more over the next two weeks)
  • Gradescope is a feedback and assessment tool that dramatically reduces the pain and time associated with grading exams, homework, and other assignments. (Recorded session from 3/30)
  • Many of you are familiar with Canvas, but we will help you with features that may be particularly useful in remote teaching. (Sessions: 3/31, 4/1, 4/2)
  • Proctorio is an online exam security solution. (Session: 3/31)
